In today’s fast-paced world, where self-care is often overlooked, it’s refreshing to see individuals who have seamlessly woven it into their daily lives—especially through something as enriching as travel. We interviewed Rita Bakop, a freelance English-French translator based in Yaoundé, Cameroon, who also happens to be a passionate travel vlogger. Despite her introverted nature, Rita has discovered that travel not only broadens her horizons but also serves as a vital tool for maintaining her mental well-being. Join us as we delve into her journey of self-care through travel, her favorite destinations, and the mindful practices she’s adopted along the way.
Q: Give us a brief introduction about yourself, your passion, and your profession.
Rita Bakop: I am a freelance English-French translator based in Yaoundé, Cameroon. I enjoy watching documentaries, funny and suspense films and series. Despite my passion for travel, I’m a home buddy and rather introverted. In my spare time, I like writing, and I almost always work with a bit of music. I also enjoy sport activities to avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
Q: As a travel vlogger, we would like to hear your perspectives on self-care.
Rita Bakop: As a travel vlogger, maintaining mental well-being is crucial for me. So, I always make sure I choose destinations that I love that offer some activities I really enjoy. I choose accommodations carefully because nice views are important to me. Every morning and every evening, I sit on the balcony or by the window and I enjoy the view while reading a book, sipping some tea, or just breathing mindfully.
Q: What inspired you to start traveling, and how has it evolved into a form of self-care for you?
Rita Bakop: I started traveling after a burnout. I was going to my friend’s wedding in another city in Cameroon. Back then, I didn’t know it could be useful, but during the trip, I was a completely different person. I felt so relieved, reconnected to nature, and I remembered that I have always enjoyed moving around, discovering new places, making new friends, learning people’s history and culture, learning new words in other languages, and so on. That is how I decided to book my first trip out of the country and explore the unknown.
Q: Are there any particular activities or practices you engage in while traveling that enhance your mindfulness?
Rita Bakop: Oh yes! At this point, I think everybody knows my love for ziplining! I love everything that will make me get out of my comfort zone. And I also need to work on my ability to let go. That is why I do the kind of activities where I don’t really control anything. I let the elements of nature carry me: ziplining, snorkeling, high rope circuits, and so on. I also do a lot of breathing and meditation as it helps me stay focused. I started during a trip, and it became a lifestyle.
Q: Can you describe a cultural practice or tradition you encountered during your travels that you found particularly inspiring or soothing?
Rita Bakop: I spent the month of December in Kenya, and I was shocked when I noticed that Nairobi was empty around Christmas. Indeed, unlike in Cameroon, where people mostly move to major cities to enjoy life and activities there, Kenyans travel to their villages to spend time with their families, reconnect with the ancestors, eat, and dance in their homelands, away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.
Q: Can you recommend some beginner-friendly destinations or travel experiences that are particularly restorative?
Rita Bakop: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a budget-friendly destination I would recommend to beginners who want to enjoy beautiful beaches, learn more about a fascinating culture, and meet amazingly nice people. There, you will have the opportunity to visit museums, take a day trip to Mbudya Island and relax on its white sand beaches, play volleyball or snorkel, discover some local meals, and buy yourself some souvenirs. Do I need to mention that you absolutely have to enjoy some sunsets while taking a walk on one of the various beaches of the city?
Q: If you were to design a special self-care day, what activities or practices would you include?
Rita Bakop: I would start my day with stretching and meditation. Then I’d probably read a book. I have to mention that I usually don’t have breakfast in the morning… I’m not hungry in the morning. Instead, I drink about a liter of warm water. I’ll then follow up with a nice lunch that includes a big slice of chocolate cake for dessert. Then I’ll go to a beauty salon for a pedicure and finish with my favorite: a good massage!
Rita Bakop’s journey from burnout to rejuvenation through travel is truly inspiring. Her thoughtful approach to choosing destinations and her love for pushing boundaries through activities like ziplining offer a fresh perspective on self-care. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting out, Rita’s insights remind us of the importance of nurturing our mental well-being while exploring the world.
